Svetlana Sokolova is the President of PROMT. She received her Ph.D. from the Mathematics and Mechanics Faculty of Leningrad State University. She has worked at the Herzen State Pedagogical Institute, and was a senior fellow at the Laboratory of Engineering Linguistics. In 1991 Sokolova founded PROMT, a small business engaged in the development of machine translation systems.
The company’s first release was the PROMT translation system, which was later followed by a line of translators sold under the name Stylus. The Stylus system was hugely successful, and for several years became a synonym for any translation program. PROMT has been received the Russian Federation National Award for Science and Technology. The company has also been repeatedly recognized by various organizations as the Russian computer industry’s most influential company.
