A network of digital fabrication laboratories, FabLabs, enabling the development of a variety of digital device prototypes using software and hi-tech equipment will be created in Russia over the next two years according to sources at the Association of Innovation Regions of Russia (AIRR) as reported by the RIA Novosti news agency.
The network is reportedly expected to become one of the world’s largest such projects.
FabLabs accelerate the time needed to assess the viability of an innovation project and considerably speed up its implementation.
Currently there are more than a hundred such labs across the globe. In Russia, the first FabLab opened in April at the Moscow Institute of Steels and Alloys (MISIS).
In the next two years, more than 20 labs for personalized digital production will be set up in Moscow and its surroundings, with more than 100 others expected across Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Economic Development is said to be financing the equipping of the labs.
